Adressing Repeating Fields (yet again)

I know that repeating fields and their shortcomings have been the subject of many posts, BUT I dare to ask - Is there a way of using a variable to nominate the nth element of a repeating field so a loop structure can progressively fill the repeats - ie - get a count of the active repeats, use this to set an 'array' variable which can then address the individual repeats as array is incremented in the loop??

ie instead of RepeatField[1], RepeatField[2] being hardcoded, use RepeatField[Array]???
