7.0v2 Not WYSIWYG In Windows

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed that the text in filemaker for windows is bigger on screen since the 7.0v2 update. I have fields that fit a certain amount of text just fine but after the upgrade they disabled font smoothing and now the text gets cut off. The wierd thing is that if I print the page it displays just fine on the printed version. Shouldn't it be the same size on screen as printed out? Everyone complained about the fuzzy text in filemaker for windows when 7 first came out but I personally think that this is worse. It doesn't matter what font I use it always appears bigger on screen than printed. I can view the database at 75% or 125% and it re-enables font smoothing but this is not an option for my databases as it makes them way too small or way too big.

This is definitely not worse in my opinion. But then, nearly everything in windows does not display exactly the same on screen as it will when printed. (That is my experience only) depends largely on screen resolution and such stuff. Now if you are talking about preview mode, the the overall look should be represented as what you will see on paper. I have not had any problems with that.

I guess that my main problem is that I designed a database with 7 and it worked great, all of the fields were sized appropriately for the information that was to be entered in them. It worked the same on the mac as on the pc. Now, after the update that is not the case. The mac still works the same but on the pc the text takes up more room and the fields appeared to have shrunk. It basically cut off 1 character. So do I hope that there will be a new update, or do I change all of the field sizes just to accomodate the pc's. Just to give an example, there is a phone number field on my database that displays the whole number without problems on the mac, but since the update the pc cuts off the end of the number. But when I print on the pc it prints the whole number just fine. So it prints just fine but whats on screen gets cut off. This just seems wrong to me. Any suggestions?

I am sorry. I don't know what to suggest here.

I noticed the same problem with the Ariel (Size 9, 10) font. I switched to Tahoma and it seemed to be fine.

Fonts have always been bigger in Windows than in Mac. It depends somewhat on the font being used. I only ever use Times and Arial/Helvetica.

When developing on a Mac I add one or two pixels to the minimum field height to allow for the extra room required in Windows.

I am using the Tahoma font. Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and resize all my fields. I will be busy for awhile I guess. The most frustrating part is that when I print from windows it prints out how it does on the mac it just doesn't display it properly. It worked fine before Filemaker got rid of the anti-aliasing, I wish they could re-implement that better. Thank you for the suggestions.

This is the sort of thing that needs to be built into the database from day 1, along with scripts to manage inter-file windows, solution startup and shutdown.

Building it all in from the start is quite easy, but adding it retrospectively is a huge (and repetitious) task.
