Biometrics

Featured Replies

Hi Forum,

I would just like to know if anyone has any experience with a biometric interface, using FM ? I'm looking to implement a fingerprint scanner, but I'm not sure if this within FM's scope.

For what excatly? Security or record keeping?

I would like to implement a fingerprinting system to match a student's fingerprint with his or her record in our filemaker database. We use Mac, does anyone know of a solution for this?

Thanks!

I think you would have quite a bit of work to do. I know Sony has a small USB fingerprint scanner, and someone (I can't remember the company) wrote the software to allow you to use the thing for OSX logins, but that's about it. The real question is what kind of information a given fingerprint device gets - either an image or a numeric sequence. In the latter case, you'd be able to do something within FMP, in the first case, you'd be out of luck.

First, like what stanely said, you need to know what kind of info the finger print device produces. Does it do calculations for you and come up with a unique id or does the device require software calculations. In my experience, software had to do the calculations.

So, if you can find a device that spits out a coded number of like: LK392L323JL34235345LKJA3425DS3423593L

If so, the device already found the ridges, etc..

If not, you will have to get the image and create a program to do some calculations.
