hi all. how does one make a find request within a portal and show only the found related records in the portal? i tried several times but it doesn't seem to work and keeps on showing all records in a related portal.

When you do a find, it will always return a found set in the current table, not in the related table. What you are trying to do is filter the portal. The easiest way to do this in FM7 is to create a relationship between the related field you want to "search" on and a global field in your main table. Typing a value into the global will cause the portal to show records matching that value. Search the forums for "filtered portal" and I'm sure there will be some examples posted.
