Creating relative file reference

I have a database that is being used on both Mac OS X and Windows NT 2000. In one of the tables I have an 'insert file' button. This allows the user to insert a .pdf file in the database stored as a reference. Here's the problem: When a Mac user uses the insert file button, other Mac users can access the file fine, but when a Windows user tries to access the same file, a 'file not found' error appears. The exact opposite is true if a Windows user is the one who inserts the file. I know about hard wiring file paths for individual files. Is there a way to get FM Pro 7 to create file paths for Windows and Mac on the fly, without my having to go in and specifically type in the path for every .pdf in the database?
