Hi again everyone,

You know how internet explorer and quickbooks have an autocomplete that remembers what you typed based on your history?

So for example, once you start typing "fm" into your browser, it shows you a drop down box of "fmforums.com" and any other web sites that start with "fm".

can u do that with FM or a plug-in?

Not exactly. But for some people, it's close enough to "type into" a drop-down value list, and the list tentatively highlights the first entry that matches your initial letters. Once the value you want is highlighted, just hit return and move on to the next field. If the value you want isn't on the list, hit the escape key and type into the field. Even if there's no value-list, you should know about popping up the index for the field (the hot key is probably Ctrl-I for PC) and typing the first few strokes of any name.

For something more complex, search for "type ahead" on these forums. There's apparently a new plug-in, currently only for Windows:

Also, I know folks like Fenton have implemented portal-based solutions that use a right-side multi-key relation so that a portal shows all the records for which the typed string matches the first few letters. Then one can click on the desired row, I believe (and of course portal rows can show clarifying additional fields to disambiguate similar names, etc.)

So, there are plenty of ways to help users move quickly to a desired value (though auto-complete would be even neater!).
