I have a summary field totaling up items from a portal. Is there any way to get the summary field to update automatically while editing?

Are you using a summary field or a calculation field Sum with the same realtionship as the portal?

A summary field.

Try using the Sum function instead. Use the same relationship that you used for the portal.
