Newbies Medora Posted December 31, 2004 Newbies Posted December 31, 2004 Hello Everybody, I'm fairly new to Filemaker Pro. I used to use Daylight for Mac OSX for all my CRM Tracking but for some reason my database got corrupted and It would not open anymore. Thank god I had an Excel file with the most recent information. However, I just downloaded the trial version of Filemaker Pro and I'm looking for some good resources on how to make my own database and who knows maybe offer Filemaker costum solutions to my current costumers. My question is. Does anybody have some good advice on how to start, training websites, tutorials etc..? Thank you.
Himitsu Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I have subscribed to this site and it has some really good articles on how things work with filemaker. I think it is a very good deal http://www.filemakermagazine.com/index.php As for doing it, just start with one of the templates that comes with FMP7 and start tinkering with it. Ask a lot of questions here, everyone helps everyone around here. Good luck.
Newbies mounce Posted December 31, 2004 Newbies Posted December 31, 2004 newbie trying to sort records. I've inherited a database that was set-up under an earlier FMPro version, but when I show all records in table view and choose Sort I get "%emf not found" and a radio button that takes me to my finder file manager where choosing an FMPro file puts me in an endless loop. I force quit and try different configurations, but am stuck. Any advice would be appreciated, Doug.
RalphL Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 The coversion from pre FMP7 files to FMP7 is not painless. The files need to be checked before converion to be sure they are clean. Even then you may have to redo them in FMP7 to get the best results. If you haven't read it, download the "Migration Foundation and Methodologies" paper from the FMI site and study it.
Newbies Medora Posted December 31, 2004 Author Newbies Posted December 31, 2004 Thank you for your reply. I'm also looking at the training cd's from Lynda.com. This should give me enough information in order to start. Thank you again.
Llaamaboy Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 From one Newbie to another here is what I am doing ... http://www.filemakermagazie.com In the upper left corner of the site is the "All catefories" "General Public" link to some very helpfull videos. My play here would be to get an understanding of all the free videos then subscribe. The fee is probably well worth the advance topics. This board, of course, looks like a great place. And the best part is the slick interface with searching of subject and post. Then lastly, The QUE book, "Using FileMaker7" by Steve Lane, Bob Bowers, Scott Love, Chris Moyer. I also have other books but this one is getting all the attention.I use the book as a "course" from page 1 to 1032. The book is written from a developer view point with a few of the reviews saying it was a tad deep. I would just say that it is a study book which discusses issues one will need to understand for more complex solutions. So depending on your future needs it may be a good book for you. So far I have done two very simple "flat" one table DB's that help a lot at work and am now planning my first relational file which looks like 4-5 tables. I hope that helps.
