Hi guys and gals,

I did a search and didn't find anything on this - also looked it up in my christmas present "Using FileMaker 7" - "The only book I need!" and can't find anything in there either so I am now asking you.

I have created a database which is an invoicing database - yet another variation upon an old boring theme.

In there I have a relationship to a table that shows me different addresses that are related because of the client name.

I have three address sections to fill in on my invoice - Client, Accounts and Delivery.

I have an 'Assign Address' for each address section.

When you click on the button, it opens a window which lists the address possibilities. Clicking on one of the addresses listed executes a script which looks to see which assign address button was hit (for client, accounts or delivery) and depending on which one, it performs script that copies the address details into either the client Name, Addr1, Addr2, TownCity, PostCode or that of the accounts or delivery using the 'set field' command.

But, problem:

When executing the script, it comes up with

'Cannot Modify this record because it is being edited in another window'

So, how do I get around this?

I was able to use a second window to locate client and use the set field command for that, but I'm doing something wrong on this one - very strange.

Please help! Thanks

ahhhhhh - so in the script that opens up the other window, simply add in commit record?

this all sounds good! So by doing this, it makes FileMaker believe that in the other window you are only viewing and not locking the record up editing it. Wicked! I will try it out! Thanks for your help!

On another point, I don't mind creating a new post for it but, does anyone know if FileMaker can do 'tree' styled grouping? Abit like 'Explore' when looking through 'My Documents' using Windows and a bit like the grouping you can do in Access.

Record locking is something you should especially be aware of in multi-user solutions. For more info, read the FM7 Foundations and Migration Methodologies tech brief on FMI's web site.

A multi-level portal can be done, but it's fairly complex. There have been a couple threads about the technique in FM7, plus some from version 5/6.

thanks for your help!!

Once I have 'commit record' and gone to a new window, as far as other persons are concerned, it is still locked isn't it? so that they cannot edit the record that I'm in. Unless they happen to jump in on the split second between the script steps commit record and new window.
