In FM5 it was possible to do finds and print while the window/file was hidden. Is this possible in FM7?. So far, my experience with FM7 is that the window must be selected for finds to be accomplished. Is this true?

All is oK. The FM7 wondow issues are hard for me to get used to, so many windows. I figured it out. Do the function (find, print...) in the desired layout and make a new window afterwords. Simple. Previously I hid windows and selected them when I wanted a window to avoid the flickering associated with new window creation. A little flicker is better then a script that doesn't function.
