elvis_impersonating_penguin Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Well, I would say that I am a fairly proficient developer in filemaker 6. I'm not and expert but I know my way around, and I have created some pretty complex solutions. Filemaker 7 is baffling me though. Thing as simple as relationships have me scratching my head. Maybe I'm just too use to 6, and I'm not seeing simple things. Anyway, my question is; can anyone recomend a book that would be good for a user at my level. I don't need a "beginners guide" or anything like that. I need a book that is targeted for someone that knows 6 pretty well and would like to learn 7. If anyone has any recomendations that would be great.
stanley Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I just picked up a copy of the FileMaker Pro 7 Bible from a client (where it was being used as a doorstop, literally) and, although it is much like previous versions, it is certainly helpful. The first three or four hundred pages can be skipped, for the most part, but the second half of the book goes into a lot of detail regarding what has changed. The new relationship system can take some getting used to, and there is a good explanation of that here. Also, it comes with a disk of samples & solutions, etc. Special Edition Using FMP 7 should be very useful - it's predecessor is an excellent resource for advanced users of FMP 5/6 - but I haven't had a chance to look at it. I believe there's also a "what's changed" white paper on the FMI site, but it may not go into real details. -Stanley
elvis_impersonating_penguin Posted March 24, 2005 Author Posted March 24, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions. I looked around, did a little research and read some reviews. I think I am leaning towards Special Edition Using FileMaker Pro 7. It looks like it has more of the kinds of stuff I am looking for. The main things I really feel like I need help on will be relationships and external authentication. If anyone else has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Rick
Mike D. Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 I have the Special Edition book and I find it very useful. The explanations and examples are well written and it comes with a CD of sample files. Mike
