ANY help appreciated - Lending equipment library

my name is Jimmy. I've been wrestling with Filemaker Pro 11 for about a solid week. I have almost accepted defeat. I have been reading a few of your posts on FMforums which have been very useful.

I think I have a very simple problem. Kind of a really basic lending library.

I have 1 table of users. (3 fields - Name, short name and email)

I have 1 table of equipment. (3 fields - Equipment name, model and serial number)

I would like to create another table/form where a user can quickly find themselves (by entering their short name). And then select a piece of equipment (by way of drop down menu) and select a date that they will return the Equipment by (by date field I assume). The item which they have hired should not be available to others. When user returns with item it is ticked back in and once again made available.

thank you for reading

I don't think you need another table for users. You do, however need a third table for the loans. At its most basic, a record in this table will say that Item X is loaned to User Y until Date Z. This is assuming each loan is for one item only - otherwise you will need another table for the loan items.
