A common problem clients have is to install the right plugin file on Linux. It seems to confuse some clients which Linux variant they have and then the plug-in won't load. When you like to position something in a window in FileMaker Pro, you may wonder what toolbars are visible to the user. The user may have the normal toolbar and below and for some toolbars you an ask the state, but not for the formatting bar. We got trial keys about 6 years ago added to our FileMaker and Xojo plugins. A trial key is only valid for a limit time and allows to test all features without demo limitations. There is a little thing we can easily do in FileMaker when creating new records. We can get the ID of the new record. But if we insert via SQL, we can't get it. Usually we workaround by using UUIDs and then put in a new UUID for the record into the insert command. This way we know in advance which ID the new record will have. Now in PostgreSQL you can use INSERT command with RETURNING option to return the new record ID. As we can use our SQL functions to connect to PostgreSQL databases, we can use that feature here. Recently a client asked how to show 3D models in FileMaker on Windows. We looked for various solutions and on the end came to using JavaScript viewer for 3D objects: js-3d-model-viewer. To show a file, you would export it to a temporary folder with FileMaker. You put the JavaScript file into the same folder and have your script export also the html file there. The HTML file needs to reference the model file by name. Although you could just name the model file the same each time and just use the same html. Recently at the dotfmp conference, we talked about storing text vectors for LLMs in FileMaker as container instead of text to save space. But does it? Let's check with current FileMaker Pro. We can store text in a FileMaker database. The size to store the record is a bit more than the text. Our test table has primary key, two time stamps and the account name for creation and modification. With the overhead for managing the blocks this takes about 270 bytes per record in our test database. Since we all love to make clones for using the data migration tool, we like to pass through some data with the clone. But a clone can't have records! If we like to pass data in the clone like a version number, we need to carry it inside the schema. This happens by putting the text into the default value of a field. At the Spanish developer conference an attendee asked me about whether we have something to show a nice colored progress bar in a portal, preferable possible for Web Direct, too. After a bit of research, I found an easy way to do this with MBS FileMaker Plugin and without using web viewers and JavaScript. We simply use GraphicsMagick functions to generate a nice picture on demand and show it as a container field. This can either be a script to generate the picture on the fly using a trigger. Or it can be a calculated field to generate it when needed. In both cases you can trigger the recreation of the image by changing a field with the percent value. …

For MBS FileMaker Plugin 14.2 we include new XL functions to create conditional formatting in an Excel file created in a script. While you can always load an existing document with conditional formatting or diagrams and just fill the cells with data, we now can create the rules for conditional formatting in a script. You can do a lot of PDF things with the DynaPDF functions in MBS FileMaker Plugin. One of them is layouting text and images on a PDF page. Let us show you the output of a new example we made for a client. On the left you see the final page and on the right side the same PDF but with visible boxes for the text output. As you see on the test page, we got a couple of cool things here: We have a header line on top, which depending on the height moves down the other text. For storing XML in a PDF or extracting it, please check our DynaPDF functions. Sometimes the little things make live easier. We had for some time various contextual menus in FileMaker to copy what is in a list. New for 14.1 of MBS Plugin is the option to copy the full field specification (table occurrence and field name together) if you click on a field name in a field picker like in the picture below: e.g. in the example above it would copy "Assets::Type" instead of just copying the text "Type". Please try later in 14.1 pre-release. You may enjoy that our copy content command will recognize checkboxes in a list and provide the value of the checkbox as 0 or 1 or - for mixed state.
