I'm running FMP 5 Unilimited (connected to WSC on OS X Server 1.2 w/Apace) on an iMac (333Mhz) and I've just upgraded from 64Megs of Ram to 160Megs. I had always ran VM "on" only using 1 Meg on the HD, Back when 8.6 came out I remember reading that this was good as it reduced the Memory requirements for most Apps, and the System. Now I've got plenty (70 allocated to FMP - it only seems to be using about 50). So I'm just wondering is there ANY reason performance wise that I should leave VM turned on? Thanks, -Arin

I am on an NT machine trying to launch a db from our FMPro DB server on a MAC. This one particular db I am trying to launch opens up half of the screen then freezes the application on my machine. I've opened up this same db from other NT machines and it works fine. Any idea why this would be happening on my machine only with this one database only? Thanks!

  7. In a 10/100BaseT in-house Ethernet network, we have 6 FM 5.0.3 files being hosted on a G4/733 acting as the server, OS 9.1, using TCP/IP as the FM protocol for connectivity with the 2 PC's on the network. There are usually 8 to 11 connected users at any given time, and for the most part, everything works fine; however about twice a day, the client Macs/PCs lose contact with the server files. The server itself is running fine (not crashed), but if I quit FM on any client machine and relaunch, when I press the Hosts button, no files show up. The only solution seems to be to quit the files on the server, relaunch, and have the clients launch and connect again, and sometim…

I'm interested in relating a Contacts FM DB to Form fields in Word 98 for Mac. The relational link would be the last name that I'd like to select from a pop-up window. I could also use a link that would be the first letter of their last name. I'd like to pull their first name, company name, address, ph. no & fax no. from my FM DB into the form fields in Word 98. Can this be done?

A few threads have danced around this, but my situation may be a bit different: I have a brand-new G4/533 (384MB, OS9.1) on which I have set up a likewise new FMP5 server app. Even without any databases running, the server will crash 1-2 times a day as long as the FMP Server app is running. With databases open, the same 1-2 (sometimes more) crashes. I have gone to an OS9.1 base set of extensions; I have tried adding RAM (up to 200; that seemed to help for a while, but now the crashes have returned); I have turned VM off and set Energy Saver to "never;" I have run Norton and TTP, optimized and so on. I have even dragged out the dead chickens and waved 'em over the dang th…

Recently installed 5.5 on three machines.(Home Ethernet) Everything was fine for about a week but then one of the Mac's started to Dial-up (Remote Access) whenever FM5.5 was launched. Now the other two machines have started to do this. I have trashed Prefs(all three), reloaded(2) turned off ALL networking(3) but still get the dialup at launch. I have removed ALL FM Files from each machine. FM5.0 did NOT do this. it does NOT go anywhere once connection is establised with my ISP. :??

I am running a collection of FMPro scripts and apple scripts to import a tab delimited text file twice a day. The first script runs and shuts down the database(to get past the record lock problem). Then the second copies the files from the server. The third then opens the files. The Problem: Sometimes the files that were updated show non printable characters. ( the square blocks ) And the strange part is the corrupt data is not contained within it's self. The fields that is linked to other files seem to be the problem. If I rerun all of the scripts (which deletes the files and puts new ones in its place) then everything is fixed.

Help! I can get FMP 5.5 to startup at Login, but I don't seem to be able to automatically open up a database. Under Mac OS, you added an alias of the document to the startup file, and it appears that OS X is the same; however, I can't get my database to automatically start up. I added FMP to the startup menu and it works fine, but my file goes nowhere. It works perfectly well if I manually start it up. Any suggestions?

Using FM4 / FM 5 on a G4/9.1 (German) I get a message "Filemaker kann die Festplatte nicht aktualisieren. Abbrechen/Weiter" (meaning: Filemaker can't refresh(?) the harddisk. Abort/Continue" If you press "Continue" it continues correctly but the problem is that it interrupts my scripts and also indexing new fields or whole databases. It happens almost every 300-500 records (my main database contains 41000 records so I have to press the enter-key really often...). Does anybody know the reaseon for that (does not happen on a Windows System, so it seems to be a MacOS error)

I have a FileMaker 4 database with 30 files that run in a network with 50 users( using FileMaker Server3), and when I open a specific file of this database the FileMaker opens others files that are used by it. It works very well in 49 iMacs of this network....I have a problem with one user that his iMac doesn't open automaticly an especific file of this database, the curious is that the problem happens only when this file have to be opened. It's important to say all the network is being working with tis database without problems. This iMac uses Os 8.6 Is it an hardware or a software that causes this problem.:?..

  21. My company has a small mac network running, with a file server running FMP 5 server and connected to the outside via 1.2mb dsl. Recently we just switched our gateway machine (a 7200 running ipNetrouter) with a MIH-130pro XRouter by Macsense. When we had the software gateway set up we had no problems getting to the filemaker server from the outside (port 5003), but since we've put this hardware router in, even when I open all ports to the server, it connects extremely randomly, and the only time it connects (if at all) is immediately after I reset the router. I was wondering if anyone had heard of a problem w/ this router and FMP 5 server or if anyone has any suggestions.…

  24. I want to set up a UPS on an iMac running FM Pro server 3. It's currently running OS 8.6, but could be upgraded to 9 if necessary. The UPS comes with a USB cable and software that runs on the iMac. The UPS software waits for a signal from the UPS saying it's lost AC power and is switching over to the battery. Then the UPS software on the Mac issues a shutdown command that shuts down the iMac. My question is, will FM Server 3 shut down gracefully in this situation? Or will it present a dialog box of some kind waiting for user input? Or, even worse, will it damage the open database files? If you can do a File:Quit from FMP server 3 while files are running without damag…

  25. I have an Apple StyleWriter inkjet printer that I occasionally use to print out reports from a FileMaker Pro 4.1 database. I've used this printer with the serial ports on both my Mac IIci and my PowerBook 3400C and everything works perfectly. I tried interfacing the StyleWriter to the USB port of my iMac using an iDock hub interface which is supposed to provide serial capability. The FileMaker reports print out all messed up - formatting is wrong, some fields are missing, etc. I then tried using a Keyspan USB/serial adapter and got the same results. I can print other documents, such as Simple text files and everything works OK - only the FileMaker files are messed up…

Try creating two files in FM 4 with a single field in each. Name them "Main" and "records". In the records file create a script that will create a new record. In the Main file create a script which performs the external script in the records file and ad the line Halt Script at the end. In the Main file put a button on the layout which will run the script you have created. Turn on filesharing in both files. Now open the files on host machine (Mac or PC) and then on slave machine. If you simultaneously press the save button on each computer, you will eventually will get a coffee cup and the system will hang. If anyone wants a copy of the files, eMail me. This problem…

We have an iMac installed (OS 9.04) running FM server (5.0v2). Installed where they a NT network. Don't know the rev version. The basic problem is that their network slows down if the iMac is on and plugged in to the network. (doesn't matter if the FM server is active) If the iMac is left on overnight their internet access is cut off totally. It sounds like it's two seperate issues. One being the slowdown and the other somekind of process that takes their server down if the iMac is on during the night. We've checked to see if it was possible that a mounted NT drive on the iMac is a possibility and it isn't. They can't mount a network drive manually so most likely …

DON'T DO IT!! MAC OS 9.1 is very buggy. I couldn't print after installing and there are some things that I TOTALLY HATE. For example. They took it upon themselves to rearrange my file structure. Instead of having a Applications folder, Internet folder, and Utilities folder on the hard drive. OS 9.1 moves them all into a folder called (Applications 9.0) I had to go and separate the folders back to a more logical approach. And in doing so the Internet Folder and Utilities Folder no longer change their icon to the appropriate one. I had to cut and paste an Icon If I wanted a custom icon. Apple's site is limited on information about 9.1 and potential bugs and…

I'm hoping someone here is good with font problems and can help me out. I've got a file where the client wants a font on a print layout to be a particular font which we only have in a PostScript version. The printing takes place on a HP LaserJet IV. Every print with that font from FileMaker produces jagged results. If the font is a TrueType font, however, it's smooth as it should be. What could the problem be? I tried installing ATM 4.6, but this resulted in PostScript errors. Thanks, Chuck

I am trying to print a graphic (pict, 300dpi) in a layout (so it appears on every record) over a local network. It prints fine from the server but from any of the other computers on the network, the graphic prints at low-res, (chunky 72dpi). The server is running FMP4.1. I've done these two tests: 1) import the graphic onto the networked computer and printed it locally. Yes, it prints fine. 2) imported the graphic into a container field on the server and yes, it prints fine over the network. But the issue is that I have to have it in a Layout on the server and print at hi-res over a network. Any solutions would be most appreciated. thanks!

8.6 or 9.0.4, what's faster/more stable? I've got a 7100 with a 266Mhz G3 in it that I use for running FMP 5. I run about 15 DB's on this machine. I plan to upgrade to FMP Unlimited and use it for the backend of a web site that's connected to MacOSXS Apache via WSC. Right now it's running 8.6, and everything seem fine, but I'm about to re-format to clean the thing up before I start using it in production, so I thought now might be a good opportunity to upgrade. My main concern is about any FMP Unlimited conflicts with the old hardware and the new OS (9.0.4) -- Any suggestions, Advice, Experiences?
