Sharing files?

Hi there,

I've been trying to implement some Filemaker databases for our small office of about 5 macs. Anyways, not sure how to fix this, but when i open one file, it says:

"Filemaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using Filemaker Pro on this computer."

So, what do i need to do to fix this? Any help would be great...

We have done something similar to what you have described. What works best for us is to have a dedicated computer as the host and use Open Remote from the other computers. You may want to search the forum archives for "Opener files" or "Opener Scripts." Setting this up can be tedious but not difficult once you understand how FM does things. Carefully set up accounts and privileges for each user. Also look at privileges within OS X on the host computer.

My experience with a similar message was the a) one didn't have multi-user checked under File>Sharing or : that you didn't have multiple licenses accessing the database (the same single license CD was used to set up both machines.

We also created a local database (placed on every machine) that had a Startup script that opened the remote database and then closed itself. That may also be a solution. (Be sure to have the Startup script run at start up.)

Good luck,

Herb

Banandy was trying to open FMP files that are on a shared network drive.

This is, without question, the best way to introduce insidious, deep and irrepairable corruption into FMP databases. Never put FMP files on a shared volume.
