I've been working on my first big FM7 project and have noticed a naging problem. Popup Lists (not Popup Menus) are very slow to display once clicked. In addition, after the list pops up and a selection is clicked, there is another pause until the value is actually entered into the field. It takes about 2-3 seconds for the menu to appear and then another 2-3 seconds for the selected value to be accepted. This is painfull.

As a test, I created a new database and saved it locally on my hard drive (to rule out any network issues). I created one table with one field. I also created one value list with 10 "custom values". I formatted the single field to be a popup list using this value list. I created one record and clicked on the field. The delayed popup and value entry was most definitely there in this test. If I set the the field to be a popup menu instead, the list displays immediately and the data is entered immediately.

There seems to be a problem with popup lists in FM7.

In my case, I'm running FM on WinXP 2002 SP1. My FM version is 7.0v2.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I have done everything I can imagine to improve performance and optimize my databases but nothing works. I am FMP on 12 workstaions and using FM server 7.

One thing I noticed is when I converted my main FMP 6 database it was 1.5 gig. After conversion it had grown to more than 2.5 gig. I then optimized the database, recovered, restored, saved as compressed version, it was still 1.99 gig.

I have a good friend who owns a very sucessful networking business and he told me it is a memory issue. He told me that my memory should be equal to or greater than any single open database. What I don't understand about that is one of the major improvements in FMP 7 is the essential unlimited database size. 8 terabits. I don't know about you all, but I certainly don't have 8 terabits of ram, and even if I did win2k only supports a maximum of I think 3 or 4 gig of resident ram.

Anyone that has any suggestions or solutions, it would be very much appreciated.

I am very displeased with this upgrade. I think FileMaker has unleashed a very sloppy upgrade and are making us all beta testers and guinea pigs. I have several scripts (some very complex) that no longer work. FileMaker actually suggested I rewrite my entire database. I only have 11 of them I use all day everyday. No problem.

I was perfectly happy in FMP 6. The only reason I upgraded was because of the file size limitations. I was pushing the 2 gig limit and I thought this was going to be an Ideal solution as I had been looking to Access and SQL/SQL Server before FMP announced this upgrade.

I paid more than 2,000 dollars to upgrade all of my workstations and server 7. Their support has been a joke and wheras I used to be one of the worlds biggest filemaker supporters I am now teetering on becoming exactly the opposite.

Check out article # 109264 on the support section of Filemaker's website. In that (short) artilce, they say there is a problem of a delay after the selection from a pop up list on Win XP. But I have slow lists on XP and 2000, before and after the selection. Hopefully a fix will come in v3, becasue it is annoying.

the delay is about at most, 1 second, on my Windows 2003 enterprise server (which has been running for about a week under heavy memory consumption) RAM 1G... database size is smaller than RAM.

on my client's machine that i tested, Windows XP SP2 edition 512 RAM, there is NO DELAY whatsoever...

i haven't been able to test a database on a system where the database file size is larger than the RAM memory.

however... have both of you above upgraded your Windows XP to SP2?

I just created a database from scratch in FM7.0v2 (Developer)

It has seventeen fields, 1 record, 2 radio lists (1 w/ 3 options, 1 w/ 2 options), 2 check box sets (each with 3 options)1 drop list and 1 drop menu (each with 2 options) on a WinXP Pro SP2 machine w/ 512MB RAM 1.8GHz proc, etc.

The Pop-up Menu is blazingly fast.

The Pop-up List is slower but still fast.(bear in mind this is a very small file)

Each of the Check Box sets has a 2-3 sec delay

Each of the Radio Button sets has a 2-3 second delay

I have even tried optimizing and compacting the database, no change.

The exact same file in FM6 has no delays.
