Veqtor Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Hi, I had no idea where to post this so I hope i'm in the right area. This may be an obvious question but i can't figure out how to do it. I have a database with stock codes. Each product has an associated file (with pictures, notes, etc. about the product) on a remote server. My question is how do i get filemaker to open the file for a certain product. I have the path to the file stored in one field and the stock code matches the file name. I don't want to have to hard code the path of each product to a button or anthing, i'd like it to be dynamic. Is there a way to do this. I have opened files on the local disk with Send Events before but it doesn't work for remote files, or at least it doesn't seem to. Thanks in advance for any help
bruceR Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Redesign to use one file with a product code field.
Veqtor Posted August 25, 2004 Author Posted August 25, 2004 Thanks for your reply Bruce but i'm not sure i understans. Do you mean have a seperate db with just product codes. If so how would that help? Sorry if i'm being stupid.
bruceR Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 I think maybe we are having a communication problem here. You seem to be saying that for every product, you create a completely different database file. You should just have a Products file, and each record in it should represent a product. But maybe you're saying something else. It's hard to tell.
Veqtor Posted August 26, 2004 Author Posted August 26, 2004 Sorry Bruce, I mean i have a products database and each product has a path field and a stock code. I also have a completely seperate (non-db) file on the server (some are in ClarisWorks, some in Word, etc.) What i need to know is how to open a file on a remote server. I can open a Word file (for example) on the local hard disk using the Send Events script step, but it doesn't seem to work for remote files. Sorry for the confusion.
