Newbies john901 Posted August 28, 2004 Newbies Posted August 28, 2004 FMP7 on reopen forgets the last screen and sort order. I arrange the screen and close, but when I open again the sort order is gone and FM is on a file in about the middle of the database instead of, say, at the top of the list where I left it. What's wrong? Is this a new "feature?" Version 6 always came back when it was left--same screen, same found group, same file. Furthermore, in 7, when I take a file from list to main, when I go back to list, the list has scrolled down a screen and is on a different file. This is the upgrade v7 (from v6), with the 7.0v2 update. At the moment I've gone back to version 6. If version 7 can't be fixed, my next statement is: does anyone want a free copy of v7 Upgrade? Thanks for help!
MoonShadow Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 John said... FMP7 on reopen forgets the last screen and sort order. I have not experienced this problem, John. Admitedly I use Developer but it is my understanding they are the same in basic functionality. Since you migrated from 6, your sort order may need to be re-stored within the script. And FM7 certainly returns me to the 'last opened' layout if I let it, but I always control it with Startup script attached through Edit > Preferences. I wonder if you have a startup script which is changing layouts for you - or a User leaving it elsewhere or sorting? Furthermore, in 7, when I take a file from list to main, when I go back to list, the list has scrolled down a screen and is on a different file. I'm sure you meant it's on a different record? Unless you have a script acting which switches records, you will remain on the same record when switching to Form view and then back - IF it is based upon the same TO. If you switch records while in form view and then return to your list, of course it will display a different record chosen. At the moment I've gone back to version 6. If version 7 can't be fixed, my next statement is: does anyone want a free copy of v7 Upgrade? It is a shame that you would give up such a tremendous tool so quickly, just because you haven't figured something out. I'll be happy to take the foul program off your hands also.
Adrian Simpson Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I too get the problem of going back to a different record. in the middle of a series of scripts, I create a new contact record if one does not exist, then commit records without dialogue, then leave that file go do a few other things then when the scripts return to that file, it is viewing a different record. I had to create a sub-script to refind the record I had just created. Absolute pain.
Newbies john902 Posted August 30, 2004 Newbies Posted August 30, 2004 [back under a different name--john902 instead of john901--a glitch bumped me out of the forum and I had to reregister with new info and email address.] Okay, I may be back on track with version 7. Before converting my file from 6 to 7, I deleted a couple of scripts I thought were attached to two buttons, and also deleted commands assigned to those same two buttons. I think I had these set up wrong--both scripts and button commands attached, apparently, to the same buttons. Whatever it exactly was, version 7 now acts like version 6 in the matter of remembering where it was. Yep, though I've been using FileMaker for years, I'm a novice. (I'm an artist, and list my art works and associated data in FM, and have tended to learn only as much as I have to in order to get basic stuff done.) So, sorry, I won't be giving my copy of FMP7 away after all. And I may climb a little farther up the learning curve before throwing my hands in the air about FM again. Thanks for the hits. And am I right about the scripts and button assignments? After converting, I reassigned commands to the two buttons but didn't remake the scripts, and the buttons work OK--and, maybe oddly, just like they did in version 6. John
Computer Geek Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I glad that you are back on track now. When you convert, the scripts sometimes need tweaking, but once you get the kinks worked out, FM7 is worlds ... no universes... better then fm6.
Newbies john902 Posted September 1, 2004 Newbies Posted September 1, 2004 FileMaker seems to be better than any competing or nearly competing thing out there. Before discovering it I tried Access, and it drove me up the wall. And the last few days when I thought I might have to switch to something else I searched, but couldn't find a darn thing. Jeez, I'm glad version 7 works OK! John
