FileMaker 7 or Server

Featured Replies

I have a very simple database that contains 5 fields. We use it as an archive of all stories that have run in our weekly paper.

I would like to set up this database to be served on our intranet only. our employees would be able to search the database for a word or string of words and the search result would highlight where the word appears in the field. very similar to "cheesy word highlighting" by James Mastrianni.

i have tried to share that file but it will not work over the intranet. seems to be an issue with overlapping fields. are there any other solutions similar to this? is this something that would work using FM Server?

also, since im only sharing a single file is the server worth it?

THanks for any suggestions.

The overlapping fields is most likely the problem. The web experience is good, but not as good as the native Filemaker experience.

How many people would be accessing the file? You could deploy this solution with Filemaker by installing a copy of FileMaker Pro (with valid licenses) on all employee workstations and then connecting to either your machine (if less than 5 users) or to a Filemaker Server machine.

Alternately you could see if developing a custom we solution would solve the problem...speak to a web designer about that.

We could have up to 40 computers connecting to the file at the same time. so the cost of each copy of FM far exceeds the usefulness. I need to find a simple solutions that is available to mac and windows users. The IWP seemed to be the best solution. but with out being able to highlight or underline the search results not sure now.

If you upgrade to FM7, you can have calculations that do the underlining or other style changes, then deploy that with IWP. Since you'll probably need these results to be unique to each user, you'll likely have to script the whole thing using globals for temporary storage of the styled fields.

Yes, with FM7...use can use a self-replacing Autoentered Calc to format the results...then show that ONE field in IWP.

However you will need a full-strength server machine (running Win2k or OSX) and Filemaker Server Advanced in order to host more than 5 users on IWP.
