FM7 solution w/ relationships and portals

Featured Replies

I need some help being pointed in the right direction for a filemaker 7 solution that I am working on. I have been using filemaker for a while, but have just started working with portals in the last few months. I am working on creating a problem tracking system and here is what I want to do.

I have 2 tables - equipment and problems. On the layout for the equipment table, I want to have a portal that will show all problems associated with that piece of equipment. I want to have a "new problem" button on that layout which will take me to the problem layout tied to the problem table. When I get to the problem layout, I want the devicename from the equipment table to be autoentered into the devicename field for the problem ticket. When I click a done button, I should go back to the equipment layout and see the problem info listed at the top of the portal.

I would appreciate any help to get me started in the right direction.

Thanks,

Jeremy

You've got the concept right. Add a button to the portal row to jump to the problem table. Put in the basic info in the bottom line of the portal (this is an easy way to add a new problem record); the ID will be created automatically if your two tables are properly linked. Then click the button to go the record (using GTRR script step). Add the detail information to the problem record. Then have a button on that layout to go back to the equipment table. If you have the problem records sorted by descending date, then the new record will now be on top.
