Hi all,

This question is for those who sell FM licenses along with their solutions to clients.

The company that I work for has been using FM6 to seel their application to their clients. Since the next release will be on 8, and most of our clients will have to upgrade, I am wondering what would happen when installing the software.

In other words, with FM6, the Product Key was not based off an algorithm embedding the name of the company. However, in 7 and 8 either the company name or the User name has to match the product sheet FileMaker gives you.

If this is the case, whever you redistribute another copy of fileMaker 7 /8 to the client, is it based off your company name, and thus all the clients now have your company name in the opening splash screen?

We have not distributed 7 /8 as of yet so I would like to find this out so we can adjust our deployment schedule accordingly.

TIA.

WHOH ;)

I never though of this! I'm going to be in the same predicament here soon.

Without knowing for sure, I'm supposing that either FileMaker hasn't though of that yet, or more likely that they will provide to resellers a special copy of FM that doesn't use that alogrithm and/or special key(s) that override that.

Well I got an answer from FileMaker today...

All the copies that we resell / redistribute will have to have our company name either as the username or the company name when installing. It might make some of our clients unhappy when they see it on the Splash screen but I guess they will have to live with it.

FM said that since we are the ones purchasing it, and because of the way the install algorithm is setup, it will have to reamin this way. There is no special code or version strictly for us.

:)
