file choking on opening

I have a file which relates to three other reference files that chokes for 5 - 10 minutes before fully opens. I've checked the external links and once opened seems to run ok. I've even deleted the referenced file links and it still takes ages to open. Any other things to look for? thanks

ps the opening page of the database only has 1 record.

I havent checked yet but I think the startup script might be the culprit
