External connection size and speed question

Featured Replies

Hi.

I quick question that i think i already know the answer to, but its nice to be 100% certain.

When accessing a filemaker server database either thru a remote computer or a iphone how much of the database is downloaded/cashed on the device? Lets say I have a 1gb database, would that take longer to load then a 5mb one if I access a table with the same amount of records?

reason:

The reason for asking is that im thinking of using container fields for project images/files and they might become quite many after a few years. And we will manly connect to the system remotely from hand held devices. So basically its reference fields vs internal storage..

thanks.

The answer to this is not as straightforward as it might seem. Binary objects in container fields behave differently than do other field types and records.

If you connect remotely to fields where the BLOB's are stored by reference, you may not be able to access them if your remote device doesn't have permissions to access where they are stored.

Thats a good point. I assume we will connect with vpn and the permissions should not really be a problem. Exept maybe from the iphones. But when it comes to speed and network bandwidth usage, i still wounder how heavy a fm connection will become...

Well using a VPN will slow it down significantly. What is the purpose for using a VPN?

Mainly due to security issues. Its nice not to open the network to the internet.
