Hi there,

I'm having a bit of a strange issue where quickfind is not working for some of my layouts.

I initially noticed it when my quickfind script didn't work. Next I tried using the native quickfind field, and noticed that that wasn't working either.

Naturally I checked the following:

Layouts > Layout setup > enable quickfind = Checked

Field inspector > Include field for quickfind = all checked (fields are also marked with the green quickfind icon

Yet no matter what I try and do, quickfind simply won't work - ie. it returns all records each time.

Remember I'm using the native filemaker quickfind for this so it's not script related. (I also checked to ensure there were no script triggers that would trigger and show all records etc)

Any other suggestions on what could be causing this issue?

I would duplicate the layout, and delete half the fields. See if the quick find works. If not, repeat the process until you narrow it down.

@Olger - Yeah, this is a global quick find field that is is in other places and works fine - as I mentioned though, even the FM default quickfind isn't working on this layout.

@Fitch - good idea, will duplicate it and slowly remove fields to see if a particular field is causing the issue.

So, I found the issue.

Turns out quickfind will not work on a layout if there is a popover.

I have a popover in my list view, as soon as that was removed quikfind started working again.

Can anyone else confirm this behaviour?

So I did another test -

I set the fields in the popover to NOT be included in quickfind - suddenly everything worked.

So if you have a popover on your layout and you include the fields in the popover in quickfind - quickfind will cease working.

Interesting indeed.  It works for me.  OSX 10.9.5.

Can you provide me a file with an example where it does not work so I can test the exact same sequence of steps?

It might be isolated to Windows 7.

Here is my file to test.  Am I missing something in your explanation?

QuickFind.fmp12.zip

And; LaRetta's file works for me, OSX 10.8.5

So it seems something else must be going on.

I had this problem too. It was on a layout that was working just fine and then one day it stopped working. I'm on OS X Yosemite on an iMac using FM 13 advanced. I thought of recent changes I made to the layout and remembered I'd added a portal. So I went through every field in the portal and unchecked Quickfind in the Inspector. Now Quick Find works on the fields belonging to the table underlying the layout.

I was having the same issue too. Apparently you cannot include any fields in a popover, otherwise QuickFind will break.

It will break in the funniest ways too: one field will work, the other not, starting on one record might, starting on an other not, etc. After hours of being puzzled this thread saved me. Thank you fmforums!!!

Now here's why this is such a sloppy, inexcusable bug: if including a field in a popover breaks Quick Find - well, then the inclusion shouldn't happen automatically for field's placed in popovers (!). Sometimes I'm wondering about the quality of the application we all have grown to appreciate so much...

You saved my day! Same issue here. Popover navigation portal had a field with QF enabled. Removing that and my scripted QF works again! Also, the file didn't work hosted, but worked fine local (and so I thought my users were crazy).

We are now 3 years later and there are still similar issues with QuickFind.

  1. make a popover and put a merge field and a regular field on it
  2. check "include field for Quick Find"
  3. select all objects on layout ( using shortcut )
  4. unlock all objects
  5. uncheck "include field for Quick Find"
  6. open the popover and notice that QuickFind is not disabled.

I have the impression that this also happens with objects in a group, but did not continue testing.

Can anyone reproduce this? It took me a while to find out why QuickFind was simply crashing my FileMaker 17. Clicking the cancel button... still removes the cancel button, but does not cancel the search (another old bug). Which forces me to kill FileMaker after 10 minutes of drinking coffee.  You are never sure that you did not miss any field that still has QuickFind enabled. With an XML clip editor, "quickfind=1" and "object flags="14"" seems to find objects with the QuickFInd flag on. I hope there will be a slightly less cumbersome way to find those object in the future.

I wonder why the QuickFind option doesn't follow the defaults either. The "include field for Quick Find" checkbox is greyed out when you have no objects selected in the layout. This slightly forgotten technique allows you to set field defaults, but the developers who created QuickFind apparantly weren't notified. Especially for QuickFInd, it is very important NOT to have it enabled by default, or it becomes a FileMaker killer. Especially if you cannot cancel a very complicated QuickFind in progress. I consider this yet another bug.

Go ahead if you're able to reproduce. I 've done my share of bug reporting, and would continue to do so, if it weren't so... unfulfilling. And I lost enough time already today because of these bugs.

Aha. You KNOW when you have disabled them all when you get this dialog when executing a QuickFInd:1437606985_ScreenShot2018-08-09at11_53_37.png.5b93116631b13b8b7635c93e68ddeacc.png

Uh. It seems to be part ( a few posts at the end ) of this thread are gone. Did something go wrong with the forum server? @Ocean West? Not really a big problem, just mentioning.

Ok, got it. My notification email kept linking back to this thread, that was split in the mean time, and there was nothing to see...:-)
