anti-virus; bad if scanning a FM db location?

Are there recommendations for the use of anti-virus software on systems with (open) FileMaker databases? I recall reading a warning (sorry, don't have the reference) that scanning a FM server volume that has FM databases open and in use could potentially cause corruption due to file locking (while the file is scanned).

My initial concern is the use of Virex 7.7 with Mac OS X (10.4.5) client with FM8 (with no server involved). The main Virex modes are: Scan local volumes when mounted; Background virus detection; Active Virus Detection. Thanks.
