Is there a limit to how many files can be opened at the same time in 5.5 client?

50 files is the limit for version 6 and earlier.

FileMaker 7 and 8 increase this limit to a recommended 125 simultaneous open files. However, this number is greatly enhanced when you consider you can have multiple tables per file.

to add to JMO response, the total of file sizes is limited to 3 gigabites.

Maybe I misunderstood your response, but here are the file size limits for different versions of FileMaker:

FileMaker 7 and 8 = 8 Terabytes

FileMaker 3, 4, 5 and 6 = 2 Gigabytes

FileMaker 2 = 32 megabytes

Oops, I meant 2.
