show phone numbers from related file?

I have a company file and a related contacts file. I am keeping track of the contact phone numbers in a repeating field. I know, I know, don't use repeating fields. But, over in Company I can see all of the contacts for the company in a portal. As I enter or highlight a contact in the portal, how can I show the phone numbers for the contact? I thought if I just put them on the layout they would show up. However, only the phone numbers for the first record in the portal show no matter which contact I am working on in the portal.
