rex Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 What is promp8? We have 2 computers peer to peer, one(98SE) with FM5, where the solutions are loaded, and another with FM5.5 (2000ME). The FM5 contains a file called Promp8. It is a filemaker application file, DOS name FILEMA~2.exe 1.89 Mb., same as FM5. It appeared a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be needed to open one of our databases. It is not picked up by a virus scan. Never seen it before!
rex Posted May 1, 2002 Author Posted May 1, 2002 To answer my own question! prompt8 is a file name generated by the virus with Klez and W32 etc. in its name. It infected our network by disabling Norton AV and generating random character files. The prompt8.exe file opened up as the filemaker.exe file. There is does not seem to be an easy way to make sure it is eradicated. We have re-formatted the hard disk and loaded up afresh and placed our database programs back in to a new shell. Also taken this server off the internet altogether. Very frightening!
