Cannot open by clicking document icon

I installed the 5.5 upgrade yesterday on a Mac using OS X. A file I made in 5.5 has a generic icon and will not open unless I open Filemaker. An older file I opened in 5.5 now has a generic icon and will not open by clicking on it. I moved the data from one of the files to Excel, made a new Filemaker file, and imported the data back. Still a generic icon which will only open within Filemaker.

Any suggestion as to what may be causing this? Or how to cure the problem?
