A Conversation About '2 Factor Authentication'

    By Josh Ormond

[ Edit: 3/16/2016 - With the help of some other people, we have been able to recover, or recreate some of the original images from original thread. ] Security is always a big topic when it involves data, or people, or possessions. Recently, over on the FileMaker Community, there was a very beneficial discussion regarding security. Unfortunately, that discussion was the victim of a necessary action...and was deleted. It was deleted, because the discussion was tied to a video that, as was det

Hacking Your Own FileMaker Platform Solutions

    By Steven H. Blackwell

Hacking Your Own FileMaker Platform Solutions Should FileMaker Platform developers mount hacking attacks on their own solutions? At first glance, this may seem an odd question. But I believe that the answer is “Yes, we should.” Consider this. As developers we see our solutions from a totally different perspective than Threat Agents see them. Without practicing our own hacking skills, we can become blind to the vulnerabilities a Threat Agent can exploit to compromise the Confidentiality

Running an iPad database as a Kiosk

Doug Alder of HomeBase Software out of Vancouver, BC posted an excellent explanation of locking down an iOS device to use an FM Go database in “Kiosk” mode, using the Accessibility options. While you’re there, check out his FileMaker Timeline (which isn’t working in Chrome for me, but in Firefox it looks great). Source

Aggregates in Filtered Portals

The question on one or more of the FileMaker forums was asked and answered. Q: How do you get the Count() of the related records in a filtered portal? A: (paraphrased) duplicate the filtered portal and make it one row in height. Place the related summary field, “Count of…”, in the single row filtered portal. [...] Source

FileMaker Server 12 BackUps FAQs

FileMaker Server 12 BackUps Frequently Asked Questions     FileMaker® Server 12 has a number of new features for creating backups of databases it hosts.   As evidenced by questions raised at the 2012 DevCon and as evidenced by a number of items posted on various FileMaker lists, there is a good deal of confusion still about how the new backup system works.   Wim Decorte and I have authored a short set of Frequently Asked Questions along with their answers about this topic. Thinking About Value Lists, part 1

In July and August we explored several esoteric value list techniques. This time around, and over the next few postings, we’re going to step back from the cutting edge, identify some common value list challenges, and propose some solutions to those challenges. A few thoughts before we begin: Some of the material in this series [...] Source

Decisions

Reminded today that deciding to do one thing is deciding not to do something else–that the root of the word “decide” is similar to that for suicide. As a small business, the opportunity costs for even your best decisions are huge: the best gig you’ve got is another customer you didn’t meet. Proud of our latest decisions, and hope I’m up to owning the consequences. Source

Weetbicks Gone Wild (and portals…)

Fixed Width for EDI and Other Reporting

Editor’s note: Today it’s my pleasure to present a guest article written by Beverly Voth. Like many other developers, I have enjoyed and benefitted from her ongoing contributions to the FileMaker community. Making portals look more native in FMGo

Portals have come a long way in Filemaker Go. With just a bit of thought though, we can make them even better. You may have noticed that if you try and scroll beyond the content in iOS that you reveal a cross hatch pattern that appears to be in the background. Website scrolling in iOS Filemaker Go even mimics this behavior in some circumstances. If you resize a layout to be smaller than the screen by pinching, or if you scroll past the content in list view you will notice this same

More Fun with Value Lists, part 2

As promised last time, today we’re going to look at a technique from Dr. Osamu Noda, which uses FM 12′s ExecuteSQL to create what appears to be a value list when in fact there are no value lists defined at all. This technique, like some of the others we’ve seen recently, is decidedly esoteric, but [...] Source
