Michael Layne from Gearbox Solutions presents on FileMaker’s new JSON functions. He does a deep dive into FileMaker’s new JSON functions and demos several examples of how they are using JSON for passing parameters, populating form data, validation and rollback, managing session info such as value lists as global. Michael also demos REST client and REST server with new data API.

In the past year and a half here at Geist Interactive, I’ve been tasked with some development work that involves connecting to various APIs. I’ve written modules for clients that get definitions, other forms, synonyms and antonyms, hypernyms and hyponyms of a term from the client’s internal dictionary and such public dictionaries such as Oxford […]

FileMaker Pro Recursion PT 3 - A Wrinkle in Timeliness: The Final Reckoning, By Andy Persons
In my first post of this three part series, I posed a challenge: how do you update hundreds or thousands of tasks interconnected with tens of thousands of connections? In my second installment, we explored a possible solution: recursively looping through each task from the end-level tasks, tracing each one to its source, then returning back down the stack and updating the dates along the way.

Ever since we built our first calendar in FileMaker 5, we’ve been publishing that data to iCal (and then to Google Calendar) one way or another. We’ve always wanted something simpler, and now we have it.
SeedCode Subscribe is the simplest way we’ve found to get your FileMaker data into iCal, Google Calendar, and the calendars on your iPhone and iPad.
Please check it out here, where you’ll find a short video showing how easy it is to get started (you can test your first calendars without even i
FileMaker Security Survey Reveals Interest and Some Confusion
During early and mid-July, I posted on FM Forums a multi-question survey asking people about their use of various FileMaker product security features. I also asked for any comments or for any recommendations they might have for enhancing product security features. The results are interesting. They reveal a high level of use of many security features; they also indicate some areas of confusion about how security features in FileMa
One of my favorite FileMaker functions is GetSummary; I use it frequently, and it had never occurred to me that there might be any alternative. Recently, however, Mikhail Edoshin pointed out on the FMPExperts list that GetLayoutObjectAttribute can serve as a viable replacement, like so: I threw together a demo file, ForgetSummary, to compare the [...]

We’ve just released the newest version of GoZync and it makes a lot of things easier for developers using sync as part of their workflow.
You’ll find it easier to sync calc fields, add business logic inside the sync, and get GoZync added to your files more quickly. And though we’re still coding for transparency and dependability vs speed, the sync itself is also faster: often 4x faster.
If you’ve looked at GoZync before, or are using version 3, this video gives you a quick overview of the new
Jason has just completed a major new version of SQLexplorer that makes it easier for beginners and pros alike to write better queries.
If you haven’t used SQLexplorer before, it writes FileMaker SQL queries for you as you fill out a simple form using FileMaker terms your familiar with (sorts, relationships, etc). You can then test your query right in SQLexplorer before copying and pasting it into your solution. Queries are clearly commented and abstracted to survive field renaming.

Serious FileMaker Pro® Development. Tic-Tac-Toe: A Challenge of Unspoken Requirements
In a recent FileMaker Pro development stress-relieving exercise, our FileMaker Pro developers were offered a simple challenge to create a Tic-Tac-Toe game using FileMaker Pro while following a few basic requirements:
The Quality must be apparent in the user interface. It doesn’t have to look stunning…just clean, consistent, fun and professional.
Creativity should be apparent behind the scenes. Step out o
Recently I was asked by a client whether we could produce a PDF catalog from his company’s database, with products grouped by manufacturer. Me: “Of course, this is FileMaker.” Him: “Can it have a table of contents?” Me: “Yeah, sure, no problem.” Actually, it took some trial and error, but we got there eventually… …and [...]

I got a request the other day to show a running balance in reverse order in a portal, in other words, from oldest at the bottom to newest at the top. Brad Cranston of Cranston IT sent us this gorgeous screen shot of his integration of ProMaps into SeedCode Complete. (Love the filters)
He got the (free) icons from http://mapicons.nicolasmollet.com and explains the legend like this:
When showing projects and events at the same time, it can be a little bit confusing because they do overlap to some extent, so you can filter either way. Also, there are three tables involved here because the phone icon is based off the incoming calls table.

Talks were exactly what you’d have hoped to see. Almost all were a bit chaotic and loads of audience participation. Everyone wants to do this again.
