In the past year and a half here at Geist Interactive, I’ve been tasked with some development work that involves connecting to various APIs. I’ve written modules for clients that get definitions, other forms, synonyms and antonyms, hypernyms and hyponyms of a term from the client’s internal dictionary and such public dictionaries such as Oxford […]

Recently I was doing some FileMaker training with my older son; we were looking at the “DayOfWeek” function in the data viewer, and I showed him that… DayOfWeek ( Date ( 1 ; 22 ; 2012 ) ) …returns a 1, since this particular date falls on Sunday, and FileMaker considers Sunday to be the [...]

The release of FileMaker Go has added a new variable to the equation we use when considering whether to use a FileMaker plug-in. We are experiencing a big shift to mobile solutions. Matthew Hardy of Real Estate Success Tools has put together a great video showing off how he’s using Zulu to link iCal and Google Calendar to his application.
Great overview and a link to the video here.
And if you haven’t seen his solution, REST, before, take some time to check out the site: it’s really well done. And as Matthew says, between Zulu and FileMaker his users can now interact with REST from any platform.

Have you ever right-clicked into a field (or Ctrl-clicked if on a Mac) and chosen Find Matching Records? It works remarkably well, but oddly enough, there is no scripted equivalent for this command. Of course if we do a Find Matching Records and then invoke Modify Last Find… …we can see what FileMaker is doing [...]

This article will strive to expose my passionate feelings about certain developer features in FileMaker Pro that I both love, and hate, with equal verve.

Skeleton Key will kick off its 2012 FileMaker online training schedule this week with FileMaker Server 101. Take a look at the line up of trainings available for you to attend from your desk, home office, or anywhere you've got a good internet connection.
Sometimes a seemingly-simple FileMaker challenge turns out to be more nuanced and educational than first impressions might indicate. This happened recently when I was asked to help make a scripted search behave properly. Most of the time, the existing routine worked correctly, but on certain records it would fail. The challenge: Click a button to [...]

Sometimes you need to add a field to an existing database that should have values for all the already existing records in the table. Say you’ve added a new field on an existing database. It’s funny how things I’ve studied thoroughly do not necessarily register themselves in my brain as useful knowledge until I’ve made use of them.
