What's new at devcon? -- any blogs?
longterm_solutions replied to ken_s2007's topic in Claris Engage
Devcon was great this year, although I'll echo an irritation about there not being any wi-fi in the conference area. Advisor should've had this taken care of long before Devcon started--word has it that they won't be managing next year's Devcon. I don't remember where I heard that, but... -
Yes, there's a way; if your form retrieves a POST variable, even if it's bogus, it'll have to reload every time, even when someone uses the BACK button. So one way to force your page to reload might be to make sure that you reach it through a POST command. Find in PHP for records with semi-colon not working
longterm_solutions replied to DKK's topic in Custom Web Publishing
You'll need to make sure it's an exact search, just as when you search for an email address. I've used this in FX.php many times, and I would imagine the same will work in the API as well: EXAMPLE: $search = 'apple;pear;orange'; $findcom->addFindCriterion('field1',"==" $search); Bob Patin Longterm Solutions bob@longtermsolutions.com 615-333-6858 http://www.longtermsolutions.com Member of FileMaker Business Alliance and FileMaker TechNet CONTACT US VIA INSTANT MESSAGING: AIM or iChat: longterm1954 Yahoo: longterm_solutions MSN: tech@longtermsolutions.com ICQ: 159333060 -------------------------- Contact us for FileMaker hosting for all versions of FileMaker PHP • CDML • Full email services • Free DNS hosting • Colocation • Consulting -
FileMaker not compatible with Mac OS X Leopard
longterm_solutions replied to grumbachr's topic in FileMaker Pro v7 – v9
My guess would be that FMI was hoping that it wouldn't be necessary to report this incompatibility, that the problem wouldn't manifest itself in a final release of Leopard; they may have had no way to know for sure if the incompatibility would still exist in the final release. At any rate, a few weeks is not the end of the world; how long do users wait for updates to big applications when they don't work with new versions of major OS releases? This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened--Photoshop would be a perfect example. As a software developer and FileMaker consultant, my opinion is that it is incumbent upon me to stay current with new OS releases, and must update his software regularly to keep current. This applies to runtimes as well as other types of applications. For my clients who have purchased runtimes from me, I will post a notice on my website, advising my clients that their FileMaker runtimes will not work with Leopard, and that an update will be forthcoming as soon as possible. If users jump on a new OS release with the first couple of weeks of its release, they run the normal risks that early-adopters always face. If this presents a problem for them, they should have done their homework before installing Leopard. They could have read in a hundred places that there is a compatibility problem between Leopard and FileMaker Pro. Apple never charges for updates to its OS other than major updates. All of the 10.x updates (10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4) were major updates. Intermediate updates, such as the recent 10.4.10, are free. The difference between 10.0 and 10.4 is huge, to say the least; each iteration has brought more speed, refinements to the GUI, new features, and much more. Safari was introduced with one of these new versions, and iChat, iTunes, and other Apple apps were introduced in there as well. One of the versions (10.3 I think) introduced Spotlight, for example, which is a global search feature in Mac OS X. To try to use Microsoft's glacial speed of updating (repairing) their OS as a comparison with Apple's is laughable at best. Apple provides numerous security fixes as they're deemed necessary, as well as interim bug fixes to each version of the OS, but they've been steadily improving the OS at a constant rate. Microsoft apparently hit huge snags in developing Vista, which is why it was so slow in reaching the market. The firm entrenchment of XP users now is going to make the migration from XP to Vista a lot slower than Microsoft had anticipated, as evidenced by companies like Dell, who have gone back to shipping their computers with XP loaded instead of Vista. As someone who's used OS X since its release, I can tell you that the difference between OS X 10.0 and OS X 10.4 is enormous.

I don't think you'll be using FileMaker 9 without buying it; the new licensing scheme does away with "sharing" someone else's license code. I like the new features in FileMaker 9; as someone who hosts databases, I love the new ability to upload databases right into Filemaker 9 Server. I also like the script organizing feature, and the ability to add SQL queries so easily is pretty slick. I haven't tried the PHP Site Assistant yet, but assuming it works as promised, could see this being very useful for simple web apps. As a software developer, I understand the need for a licensing scheme that prevents license sharing, but I do wish a single license could be used by the same user on 2 machines (in my case, my laptop or my desktop), since I never use them at the same time. But it's impossible to police this. I think FMI is moving in the totally correct direction. If you're using 8.5: Open the Object Info window while in Layout mode. Select the tab by clicking its NAME (the tab itself will then display a box around the name. Type an identifier into Object Info. Your question is exactly what I've been investigating the past few days, and here's what I've determined: For a single install of FMSA, you can use one install of WPE; you can't connect to FMSA with two installs of WPE. I'm upgrading one of our web servers here, and wanted to have two installs of WPE (one on the old machine which is still running, and a 2nd install of WPE on the new machine, to which we're moving); however, FMSA won't allow the 2nd install of WPE to connect. In FMSA Admin, it *appears* that multiple copies of WPE can be used, because the heading over the WPE username/password says "FileMaker Web Publishing Engines" (plural); however, after puzzling over this, I've come to the realization that this isn't possible. I would guess that this is planned for the future, but it's apparently not possible now. I've never seen WPE crash here; in fact, I would have no way to know that it crashed, since it doesn't present anything to the user that shows it's even running... are you sure your crashing is due to WPE and not some other application running on that machine? best set up for FMSA on 2 machines?
longterm_solutions replied to Reed's topic in FileMaker Server 11
So you have more than one web server pointing to the same install of FMSA? When I go into FMSA Admin, I don't see a way to add a 2nd username/password for a 2nd install of WPE. That's what has me stumped... best set up for FMSA on 2 machines?
longterm_solutions replied to Reed's topic in FileMaker Server 11
John, now that I have your attention, here's a question that you can probably answer: During the process of migrating from the old web server to the new one, I'd love to be able to connect to FMSA from both web servers, so that I can move sites gradually while doing some testing along the way. I haven't been able to find any documentation that states whether it's possible to connect 2 WP engines to one FMSA install; is this possible? Is it possible to have 2 web servers, each with their own install of WPE, both connected to the same FMSA machine? Thanks, Bob Patin Longterm Solutions bob@longtermsolutions.com 615-333-6858 http://www.longtermsolutions.com CONTACT US VIA INSTANT MESSAGING: AIM or iChat: longterm1954 Yahoo: longterm_solutions MSN: tech@longtermsolutions.com ICQ: 159333060 -
best set up for FMSA on 2 machines?
longterm_solutions replied to Reed's topic in FileMaker Server 11
John, I stand corrected! I didn't realize that the PHP API (or FX.PHP, I assume they both do this the same then, right?) actually does the interpolation between XML and PHP. I'd assumed that WPE did this... However, when I spoke to a tech at FMI, he asserted that best practice was to separate WPE from the FMSA machine when possible, which is why we've always run WPE on the web server here. My particular dilemma was this: we were buying a new server, and had the choice of putting it to use either as a new web server or as a new FMSA machine. I decided to implement it as the web server, since it seemed to me (and the tech at FMI, whose name I now forget) that it would be more beneficial there. My other question to him was whether I'd see any improvement in performance between, for example, a 2.0Ghz dual-core Intel Mac and an 8-core Intel Mac as a FileMaker server. His opinion was that I wouldn't see much difference at all, since FileMaker really didn't make use of all the power that an 8-core Mac has to offer. What's your take on it? It seems that I get varying opinions on this, and I'm still planning to upgrade our FMSA machine fairly soon. Thanks for setting me straight on the "chain of command" in a PHP environment with FileMaker; all the best, Bob Patin Longterm Solutions bob@longtermsolutions.com 615-333-6858 http://www.longtermsolutions.com CONTACT US VIA INSTANT MESSAGING: AIM or iChat: longterm1954 Yahoo: longterm_solutions MSN: tech@longtermsolutions.com ICQ: 159333060 -
How did you learn how to be a Filemaker Pro?
longterm_solutions replied to Nagasaki's topic in Making A Living
If I were starting again and knew that I was planning to make a living with FileMaker, I'd seek out training from as many sources as possible. I started dabbling with FileMaker back in the late 80s, more as a curiosity at the time rather than as a way to make a living. At the time I was making a living solely as a studio musician, so programming was just a hobby; these days I split my time pretty evenly between programming and playing, and almost all my consulting work is either in developing FileMaker databases or designing web applications using FileMaker and PHP. There's always room for another really sharp programmer; good luck to you! FMSA v8.04 on Mac OS X server (intel) 10.4.8
longterm_solutions replied to karlthomashove's topic in FileMaker Server 11
I had a nightmare of a time trying to find out why I couldn't get my Intel Mac to start web services, until I determined that the culprit was Web Server Connector, which we use for our clients who are still using CDML for their databases. Once I re-installed without Web Server Connector, everything went smoothly.
