  1. Thanks Ray, You've always made yourself available to the FileMaker community and offered your vast expertise. Thank you for your steadfast support of the FileMaker community... Harry
  2. Hey Comment, As always, well done sir and as Journeyman said "has thousand uses"! Happy New Year one and all... Harry
  3. Hey Truly, You may want to check out http://filemakertoday.com/com/showthread.php/28185-The-quot-Separation-Model-quot-Matt-Petrowsky-of-FileMaker-Magazine-and-Me! We are discussing the separation model and you may find some things of interest. Harry
  4. Well done there Alex... With your change it works great on both PC and Mac with no need to start looking back! BTW you should know that it works poorly on my Nintendo Play Station. Maybe the worst part of this post is the number of young FileMaker-In's saying "Nintendo what"? BTW using your solution Space Invaders has fuzzy war ships and Pong has an elongated ball. If Ender is lurking that means "Not Round". Please go to work on that, hey maybe a custom function or two. You did good Alex, we always appreciate your sharing and the fine craftsmanship of your work. Nintendo not withstanding... Harry
  5. Hey John, Nice file and well done as always... Hey, when did you move to NC? I moved to Wyoming in March but wasn't aware you were moving as well. What's Florida going to do without you there for the tax base? Harry
  6. Hey Alex, I’m happy everyone loves your solution and I’m sure you’ve enjoyed the accolades. But I must tell you I got nothin out of it. I found it boring, un-insightful and totally devoid of best FileMaker functionality. The scripting is juvenile, the calculations are menial and the layout lacks in appearance and substance. It took me a moment to realize that I had inadvertently opened one of my own solutions. My bad, sorry there buddy! There is one thing however that’s very wrong and terribly sad and that is your statement [color:red]“Sorry, i've haven't dealt with macs for a while so this never really occurred to me.” This is indeed a sad-sad-sad statement of fact my friend! I admit using a PC once myself but was smart enough to grab it by the cord and throwing it out the “Windows”! Well done Alex even though I’m sure you got the idea from me! Love Ya Man, Harry
  7. Hey Mike, Very nice and clean! Well done kind sir... Harry
  8. Hey LaRetta, I have no "Comment" on that! Harry
  9. Hey Vaughan, This is very well done and thought out. It’s straight forward and incredibly useful. I know you said you were designing a solution that led you in this direction. But what made you decide on this specific method. Trial and error or just walked right into it? I know how you can get great inspiration from, ah shall we say Sheila! Good work Vaughn, Harry
  10. Hey girlfriend, Yah your bio says "Charlotte" doesn't it. What are you doing up there in that big banking region, you being a big financial mogul again? Harry
  11. Hey John, I think you may be right, something you are not well known for by the way! : I've looked at a couple plug-in options for QuickBooks, but man I don't like using plug-ins... I'm frankly surprised by the lack of FileMaker accounting and/or check writing solutions. I know of a couple high end packages written in FMP, but you'd think, at least a check writing solutions would be as available as a contact management package. I've always stayed away from accounting solutions from the developer standpoint and really don't want to change my mind after all these many years. Maybe you're right John, maybe the QuickBooks direction. Harry
  12. Man Oh Man you guys have me answering myself and that just can't be good. I've always stayed away from accounting solutions and I guess you guys have too. It's a different beast for sure. What about a check writing solution? I remember back in the, gosh it must have been FMP4, a couple decent check writing solutions but have not seen one since. What about you guys, do you know of one? Please don't make me build one I just don't wanna! So what say you Mondookers? Harry
  13. Hey guys, I'm looking for an accounting template and thought I'd ask you guys if you know of any? It need not be anything big and booming, just something to handle checks and light accounting. Thanks for your help, Harry
  14. Hey John, Now that I'm back in mens clothing I even send people... :)
  15. Ya what he said… Lets face it you really have to pay attention when you’re talking a solution that will be served in the first place. There are so many things lurking to bite you that is of little concern on a desktop solution. Things like overall solution speed and sorting speed just to mention a couple. Now add on the web and things just multiply. You have a whole new list to consider in your web based solution. I don’t mean to give a primmer here, because most of you know it and others can only sit so long. But you need to do your homework well in advance of development. This is not a place you can wing it and deal with it later because here it's either right or its just wrong. Little things like Dialog boxes don’t work on the web, scripts break, calculations that worked fine before just sit there and laugh at you. You also have a whole new set of privacy issues… In short, it's just so much fun. I was going to say "as much fun as you can have with your clothes on"! But I thought better of it with Genx being an Aussi and all. Oh and while we’re on the subject lets talk “Relationship Graph”… The very first thing Genx said to me after receiving my solution was “Finely a solution where I could read the Relationship Graph!” Well OK, his first words were actually “you are like a FileMaker developer God” but hey, why mix metaphors! If my good friend Ender is lurking, metaphor means “small things you can eat with your hands” Ar-Ar-Ar. And while we’re on the subject pay equal attention to sound data design conventions and descriptive naming! FQZpop may be great for now but what does it mean to someone else or even yourself 6 months from now? Why not just call it what it is “CityPop”. You can even thumb your nose at the minimalists in the group and type “CityPopulation”. One thing I know I don’t need to mention in this group is a sound and frequent backup plan. Look out Aunt Millie, this guy’s using the “B” word. He’s good isn’t he! He may not know a Dingo from a Roo but he knows this FileMaker stuff doesn't he... 16. Hidey-Ho Fellow FileMaker-Ins, We have something special for all FileMaker-Ins today. A new site built entirely on FileMaker and it’s just about as good as it gets. Some would call it shear perfection, while others have used such superlatives as Spectacular, Outstanding, Magnificent, Stupendous, and surly it was made by God himself! Well close to God anyway… I built it! Ok Ok maybe I didn’t build all of it, now that I have God involved and all, I should at least be a little truthful. Hey, anyone can try something once right. Man you guys can be a tough crowd. First of all the idea and brains behind the idea is a guy by the name of Steve Thompson. I must apologize in advance by telling you two things about Steve. He’s a Navy guy and a Texan. Kind of puts a whole new tilt on the expression “an officer and gentlemen” doesn’t it! Hey I was in the Army and understand maybe he couldn’t get into something that prestigious. But I’m sure he could have been a Marine! He has more business for me but I guess I can kiss that good bye! What a horrible time for my backspace button to go out… Oh no not the send key… One thing I can tell you about Steve however is he’s no slouch when it comes to ideas! This may be the best I’ve ever seen because he just hit this one out of the ball-park. Him selecting me as the developer not withstanding! I built the database with my new Australian friend Alex Babkov best known on the FileMaker forums as Genx. He performed the PHP side of the project. I new I needed help when a friend of mines wife kicked him out of the house and I found out PHP didn’t mean “Please Help Pack”! Alex did a fantast job which will be obvious to you when you see the site. Our client’s directive was a Straight forward, business like site. Where you can see both the bacon and the sizzle. You may have guessed I tossed in the last part, but I came by it honestly. Genx was walking down the street in his home town of Melbourne, with a pig under his arm and these two ladies, Sheila’s as they call them in the Great Down Under, walked by and remarked “that is one filthy pig” and Genx said “It’s not a pig it’s a Hog” and the lady said “I was talking to the Hog”! My point is. This is a great site that “pops up great every time or my name isn't Orville Redenboc”—Hmmmm sometimes I'm just so confused. Look, everyone reading this knows one thing for certain about me and that is I am not prone to exaggeration. Embellishment maybe, but never exaggeration! So I can tell you this just amongst us girls… Alex isn’t listening in is he? No Ok, so I can tell you this in confidence. This Aussi knows a few things about PHP and FileMaker. If I was staked to an aunt hill with a million ants, honey poured over me with a Johnny Cash song playing in the background. I’d still tell you I’m proud to have partnered with him. I’m also pleased to say he feels much the same way about me… Just the other day he was overheard saying “I’ll tell you this about Harry, As an American he makes me proud to be an Australian”! Maybe I’ll just send him a few Johnny Cash songs myself… Maybe “Burnin Ring of Fire”! What the site does is provide the ability for Americans to participate in the legislative process daily, if desired, instead of once every 2, 4 and 6 years at election time. How you say? By allowing them to vote on literally every bill in congress! But the icing on the cake is the ability of every voting American to compare their elected official’s vote’s right alongside their own. What drives this site and maintains the data integrity you ask? You guessed it, good ol FileMaker! FileMaker drives the site and I can tell you in all humbleness, humble being my middle name, is one of the, if not THE most technologically perfect solution ever devised by man! Do you hear a little Sweet Georgia Brown playing on yonder stereo? I’m proud to be part of this with my friend Sir Alex of Genx… You done good and it has been my absolute pleasure to have worked with you. I know it just makes you want to tear up! Here’s the site… http://e-votingbooth.com/ enjoy… Live Long & Prosper and Remember Who Loves Ya, Harry
  17. Hey Guys, This is quite a conversation and I can see why it has 1165 posts. It gets us into areas and ways of calculations and scripting that you don't see that often. Now that 9 offers us so much more flexibility to SQL and PHP It's become a real adventure. Milo I'd like to show you how smart I am by posting some Grandiose script, but the truth is Soren took all the fun out of it by his great scripting, the boy is good, you can tell by his smile! Who said it was a smile only a mother could love... All You need to re-dress the script… Woo-Ha-Yee-Ha and just after you got back into men’s clothing. We like to keep our comments (did I say Comment) transparent around here so you could make that a Glass dress, now that bare’s looking into! Here's your script and all I've done is changed the location of where the print invoice is called and I think it will work without a hitch. Live Long & Prosper, Harry
  18. Hmmmmmm. Well, I mean I guess you could, but you're using 8 Advanced and I'm not sure why you would want to? Even with a large solution I'm not exactly sure why you'd want a Help file unto itself. Not with all of the built in helps right within the shell... Maybe you could explain a little more of your thinking. Live Long & Prosper, Harry
  19. Greetings Fellow FileMaker-Ins, Very interesting conversation! It’s what they say in the book business as a “Good Read”. I especially liked the very first post where DukeS said “For all of us” Whew and here I thought I was the only one to make such statements. So DukeS it’s you and me man. I’ll even tell you in all humility, something I’m not well known for, that there are those on this and I dare say other forums that will tell you even I don’t “Speak for all of us”… I know what your thinking… Surely not! Now I’m not going to let you guys drag me into a conversations about FileMaker, Access and Sex… Three things I clearly know nothing about. But I do have something that will “Speak for all of us” and that’s not always getting the things we want. Some of us can speak about FileMaker in that regard because each of us can think of at least one thing we would have liked added to FMP 9 and were disappointed it was not included. One can only hope that the disappointment is short term. I’ll burden no one by trying to tell you that I’m some great visionary or Guru, but I must tell you I’m excited about FileMaker’s future direction. Not by what I hope, by what I see. SQL alone is huge and their plans for it and other directions are quite obvious from 9! And Jtoner you are right about the Plug-Ins and that Access has had it for 10 years. If I’ve learned nothing through the years it’s Don’t refute truth! I know that your post was intended to be fair and balanced and with that in mind I would only offer that a few more sentences on the development and deployment aspect of FileMaker and the fit & finished of the end product would have been a reasonable inclusion... I started this discussion mentioning FileMaker, Access and Sex and feel it only fitting to tell you this story. It was years ago behind the Sale Barn with one the Semi beautiful Johnson twins and by all accounts it looked like I was going to do well. When all of a sudden she drew back and said “I’m aware of the esoteric aspects of sexual behavior and consequently must preclude you from such activities”! I said “I don’t get it” and she said, “Ya that’s what I said”! So you see… I learned early on about Access! Live Long & Prosper, Harry
  20. Hey Independent and fellow FileMaker-Ins, I started in the business using Omnis, Fox Pro and 4D all with strong languages and frankly thumbed my nose at this upstart database called FileMaker. The name itself just screamed “To simplistic for prime-time”. Back then a company owned FileMaker called Nashieba. I probably spelt it wrong and I’m going back to somewhere around 1985 I think. Plus, how good can a database be without having to read page after page of code right? In 1992 I selected FileMaker as my development tool of choice and in 1997 my exclusive choice. I made this choice for a number of reasons but primarily it came down to two. 1. Development time. 2. FileMaker was making the right decisions on functionality and data engine characteristics. I could elaborate on those points but no need to further bore everyone. I admit it’s difficult for me to be unbiased when it comes to other database platforms. I think the only thing I really want to say is FileMaker has never let me down. Sure, I wanted them to give me this and that as a developer and was disappointed when I didn’t get them. But the one thing they always gave me and what’s most important is a “Rock Solid Platform” that I can count on for me on my clients. As for Access, it always felt to me that it was trying to split the difference between FileMaker and Fox Pro and kind of failed at both! Maybe unfair, just my overview. Yes, I get calls every once and awhile about my selection of FileMaker and had one just the other day. This irate lady called screaming at me saying “You’re such an obnoxious idiot”! I mean what can you do or say about something like that? I just said “OK Mom I'll call you later”… I will now tell you in advance it’s probably a good time to stop reading this post because it has absolutely nothing to do with FileMaker and everything to do with Genx. Thought you slid one buys us didn't you? That’s just so wrong on so many levels… First of all anyone who really knows Ender and me would never confuse us with “Nice and Intelligent”! : And to those who say “these guys are passive aggressive, chronic and manifested by sullenness”. I say it’s mean spirited. True, but mean spirted! The worst thing about this unprovoked attack is the inclusion of my close personal friend Ender. Sure he’s inarticulate, insufferable, with little lucidity regarding FileMaker. But he’s my friend! Genx I have only one word for you… Dingo! Harry
  21. Hi Heathbo, Vaughan is “Right Again” as usual and his statement that follows is well worth seeing again. Look if you’re messing around at home with something keeping your stamp collection, maybe you need not worry about this kind of thing or even SM for that matter. But if you’re building something more substantial, maybe something you’ll be networking. Not to build in script routines for data import/export and at least rudimentary data management is just well, suicide. Now anyone sitting there reading this thinking, “What’s the big deal, I don’t even set backup routines much less back up my stuff"! You're right-A-Rooney, No reason to sweat the import-export routines... : Harry
  22. Greetings FileMaker-Ins One and All, Fenton you are a veritable pillar of right thinking and restraint. I say charge us another $2 bucks if you must and give us the save button. Can we work around it, yes but that is not your question is it? Your question is “why” should we have too and that sir is valid. So FileMaker, give it up for Fenton and the rest of his followers The Fenton-ites “Why”? Come on man lets print em. I once saw a post from Uncle Lee, where he said shucks! Man alive, with a word like that the profanity gates are wide open and running rampent. It reminds me of the priest, rabbi and minister who walked into a bar and the bartender looks up and says, “What’s this, a joke?” Fenton and the Fenton-ites, hey there could be a rock group in there somewhere, simply want to know why? I don’t think there are many who would disagree on the great step forward with script maker. It’s just that a save button seems so natural it’s hard to believe it’s not there. Oh well, Harry
  23. Greetings Fellow FileMaker-Ins, Hey one little mistake, man this is a tough crowd? I guess I’m like a blond with half a brain... Gifted! Genx you see now what I've been saying about Ender all this time. He just kind of sneaks into FileMaker style conversations just trying to “trip the light fantastic”. It's just so wrong on so many levels… Ender lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota you know. Last winter it was one of those cold Minneapolis mornings and Ender was walking down the street with his hands in his pockets. A passerby commented "it's the first time I every saw a FileMaker developer with his hands in is own pockets." You have to admit though, begrudgingly, that his “Maybe he meant "cooties". Harry's got those too.” Was funny. So sometimes I itch a little! Hey while you guys are at it why not go over to the Cafe and read a truly thought provoking thread aptly named "Is 9 Fine or Pickled Swine"? I admit however that I do at times make a pig of myself on this FileMaker stuff, you know, just to be a ham! Just click right here on this link. http://www.filemakertoday.com/com/showthread.php?t=13829 As the name implies, this is very serious stuff, so don't go over there with an attitude of whimsy, not to be confused with Enders dog whimpsy. Only serious and studious FileMaker’Ins please… And Genx, that last post was just so wrong and that you would say such a thing just makes me tear up a little. You and Ender got some kind of a tag-team match going on or something? Where is LaRetter when I need her? Live Long & Prosper, Harry
  24. Hi Folks, I’ve converted a number of SM files to 9, some with no problem what so ever and others with every problem what so ever! One way that has worked on over 30 solutions is to run File Maintenance on the files prior to conversion. I run both “Compact File” and “Optimize File” and it’s worked without a hitch. However, you do need Advanced. Hey LaRetta, I took the same 8.5 files I mentioned above and compacted them as you mentioned and 24 of 33 files that would not open before did open after compacting. So coodoes my lady! FMP9 does a different consistency check than previous versions and from what I understand it has to do to the new coding necessary for new SQL connectivity. I’m not sure that I fully understand why that is, but it is my understanding non-the less. It's like the two Irishman walking out of the bar... Hey it could happen! Harry
