In a single file, is there a limit to the number of records or is the limit solely based on the file size?

It is based upon file size.

FMI claim there is no limit on the number of records other than that imposed by the file size limits - however if you want to have serial numbers in your records, then there is a limit. FileMaker only supports serial numbering in the range from 1 to 2,147,483,647 (ref FMIKB article# 107472), so if you were envisaging more than 2 billion records, you'll be needing to split them over a few files.

There's always a gotcha!
