Easiest Way to Tranfer Layouts

Is there a simple way to transfer similar forms/ layouts from one copy of a database to another without having to do it all manually (i.e. copying and pasting and tweaking everything by hand)?

First, make sure that all of the fields in the layout you want to transfer are also in the other file.

Then, I suggest creating a small box and putting it in the upper left hand corner of the layout.

Now (in Layout mode, of course) select all and copy.

Go to the other file, into the layout you want, click near the upper left hand corner, and paste. You'll get everything in exactly the same place.

Of course, you'll want to make sure you delete the box you added (in both files).

So far, there isn't a way of importing layouts or fields the way you can import scripts. Maybe in version 7...

The only glitch is setting up the tab order for the new layout(s). SelectAll/Copy/Paste retains field properties but not the tab order! If you're happy with the default left-to-right and top-to-bottom, all well & good. Otherwise, you have to set it up manually. I had to keep checking back and forth between the old copy and the new to get it right.

Having just completed this for several huge & complex layouts, now someone will probably suggest a brilliant work-around. smirk.gif

Well, it isn't brilliant, but...

Hire someone else to do the tab order for you. It'll cost you some money, but you don't have to deal with it.

No, I'm not suggesting you hire me -- I don't want to deal with it either.
