Does it seem counterintuitive to anyone else that when you drag the contents of a field to another field FileMaker does an insertion rather than a replace. Dragging "Joe" into a field that already had "Bill" gives "JoeBill" as the result instead of replacing Bill with Joe.

This may be a feature request for FileMaker, unless someone has a way around this. Would it be possible to write a plug-in to change this behavior? Perhaps I'm missing the utility of having an insertion rather than replacement.

Thoughts any one?

That D&D does an insert (as opposed to a replace) is handy when you just want to move a word or phrase to another place in a longer textfield. I would find it handy if Drag and Drop would do a 'smart' insert, adding spaces where necessary.

Further it would be illogical if D&D would replace, because there is no clearly defined target as to WHAT to replace whilst you are dragging.

But at the other hand, if you drag and drop between field that have short entries, like you describe, replace would be handier.

Maybe the ideal solution would be 'replace' when the field is set to 'select entire contents on entry' and insert otherwise.

Now go and tell that to Dr. Filemaker!

regards,

Ernst.

I have no problem with the drag and drop. If I want to replace the info in a field...... Copy/Paste works fine for me. I only use D&D if the field is empty.
