My next solution will have a database that will contain up to 20000 record.

Each record have a container field to store a 300-700kb jpeg.

The file will be about 10GB.

Can Filemaker Server handle it?

2GB are maximum for filesize IMHO on all current FM platforms.

Store just references to the images.

Does references to images work with FM Server too (with the images stored on a directory on the server)?

Sure. All users on the network must have the same path to the image directory.

Not that I know. Actually the performance is just the performance of disk subsystem and network. That is always slow or fast -- depends on the conditions.
