I need to put something together that would keep the previous state of a field in another field, as well as a change date.

For ex, let's say we have the field price, i would want a field named, say oldPrice, which would hold the value of the field before it was last changed and a priceChangeDate field which would hold the date and time of change.

initial experiments with calculations haven't gotten me anywhere just yet...

anybody have any pointers?

Do a search on this site for +audit +trail.

If I'm understanding your correctly, you are describing creating an Audit Trial, often referred as Field Modification Tracking.
