Hello,

I ran a search on my problem and saw a few posts suggesting all JPEG is not created equal. I did not see an answer to the question RE:"JPEG ERROR # 53

If the problem is JPEG format, is there a better picture format (GIFF, PCX )etc. to use for filemaker??

I scanned a paper form used in my business and placed the scanned image on a BLANK layout with fields entered in the appropriate lacations. It looked pretty good (an exact match). Browse mode and layout mode were fine. Preview mode shows an error (jpeg error #53) The original jpeg image was 1.4 meg. I have since reduced it to .4 meg. Yet the problem still persists. I have other Jpeg images that are larger with no error messages.

What's the deal? frown.gif

Maybe try it with a .gif version as well?

I'm assuming that you're talking about windows here from the icon on your post.

Sounds to me the error might be something to do with the way that particular jpeg was saved. Maybe try opening it, copying the whole image to the clipboard and pasting it into a new image, then saving it - your imaging program might use the default jpeg settings and it might work.

I'm no expert with FileMaker and images (yet - it's something I'm going to have to do soon), but I've never had any problems just dropping a jpeg onto a layout.

So I'm afraid I can't help you specifically with error #53 here.

For line art/document scans I often find gif is a better format as the compression used in default JPEG settings can lead to blurred artefacts around straight and well-defined lines. Jpeg tends to be good for photos, where there's constantly varied colour and patterns, but I always use gif for images where there are large blocks of solid colours - only for internal/web use though as gif is limited to 256 colours i believe.

I'd suggest trying it as a gif as well - just do it on a blank layout so you don't interfere with anything else - I'm pretty sure you won't have a problem.

Or try re-saving the JPEG in a new image. Not just by using 'save as', but create a new image, copy and paste the current image contents into it, and then save it.

Those are the things I'd try before trying to rip things apart and dig any deeper.

Thanks for your response. I'll try .gif format and I'll let you know how it goes.

This might have something to do with it, this is about Filemaker 4 though

"5.3 "JPEG error #53" and other errors

FileMaker Pro 4.0's default memory settings will allow for use of most graphic images, but larger, more complex graphic images will require that more RAM is allocated to FileMaker Pro 4.0. If you attempt to import large and/or complex graphic images without first increasing the amount of memory allocated to FileMaker Pro 4.0, you may encounter error messages such as "JPEG error #53". If you encounter such an error, quit FileMaker Pro 4.0, and increase the amount of memory allocated to FileMaker Pro 4.0. For information on how to increase the amount of memory allocated to a Mac OS application, please see the documentation that came with your Mac OS-based computer."
