matt d Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Hey everyone! I have a lot of people ask me about a list of all states and a list of all cities to use with FileMaker (any version). Well, to make the work easy for those people I help, I put togeather a filemaker database with all the states and citys in it. This file contains two basic tables; Cities and States. The Cities table contains the city name, its state and zip code (not already entered as most cities have multi zips). The States table contains the state name and abvr. I also included a example layout called "Example" which shows you how to make your fields auto-populate the state and zip code when you just type in the city. Hope this help a lot of you out! Also, this solution is not protected in anyway so feel free to import the data found in this db to your own. Becuase this form will only let me upload a file just over a meg large you have to download it from the following ling: Download Here 2.56 MB (2,686,976 bytes) -Matt
matt d Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 I forgot to add that the db contains all US cities. Sorry Canada!
BrentHedden Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Oh wow - this must of taken you a while to compile. This is even worse than trying to compile all of the countries of the world in a value list. At over 25 thousand cities, it's a heavyweight. Very cool interface and great idea. This brings up a slightly complex question - what if the City name is the same in two or more states? For example - there is a Green River, UT and a Green River, WY. Both are in the database. It defaulted to UT, probably because the ID# was smaller and found it first. Now all we need to do is list what county that city is in...... Thanks - this will make a great reference.
matt d Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 Thanks for the reply! Yes, the multi-name city is a problem so right now I am working on zip code lookup as well.
Mordaunt Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 Ahhh...this was just what I was searching for but the link has gone dead....any chance of still getting this handy-sounding file?
Lee Smith Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 The original poster hasn't been around for a long time, and didn't post a off list email for contact. As you point out, the site appears to have been abandoned. The only chance you have is if Brent Hedden has kept a copy and is willing to share. Lee
