Has anyone else had this problem? When in the browse mode in FM7 (w/ Mac OS 10.3.9) usually the cursor is half a character off, sometimes about eight characters off, occassionally right on. I did not have this problem with FM6.

Any suggestions would be much appriciated. Thanks.

(Btw, I'm a totally low level, one-person-office user.)

Achitennis:

I'm on OSX 10.3.9, and I haven't seen this problem, but make sure you've got the latest update of FMP (I believe it is v3 right now) as there were all sorts of strange rendering bugs in the initial release.

Also, in the Appearance System Preference pane, set the text smoothing off for '8 and smaller'. FM7 relies on anti-aliasing to properly space things.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have v3 of FM7, and I already had the text smoothing off for font size 8 and smaller, coincidentally.

The problem seems to be with text/numbers set to a RIGHT tab. And the same thing happens at various zooms. This is a file I converted from FM6, if that makes any difference.

Another weird thing is when I drag a field onto a layout it does not use the default font type I have selected (Helvtica) in Preferences>Fonts (instead it uses Skia, which I have used in the past).

Any other thoughts?

That was one of the anomally's we experienced converting our FM6 databases to FM7 (v.3, OS 10.3.9). I've gotten some cooperation by setting the font smoothing below the font size I'm using - set to 6 to get font size 8 to behave.

Another really annoying thing I've observed with text boxes in converted databases is the words get cut right where the margin occurs - not between words as should happen with wrapped text. Does anyone know a cure for that?

In The File Options, go to the Text tab, and uncheck the "use Asian Language line breaking" option

Thanks!

File --> File Options --> Text --> "Use Asian language line-breaking" wasn't checked, but then neither was "Use Roman language line-breaking" - so I checked the latter and now it wraps whole words properly!

Having the same problem with one of my machines. I have 10.4.1 on one machine and the v3 update corrected it wonderfully, but on another machine with 10.3.9 it corrected only a blurry Preview mode and not the cursor problems. I don't understand!! If anyone indeed comes up with a solution please let us know - I've got an 83-year-old man using that computer and is about to rip his hair out (at least he's got lots of it) - but it is better than the corrupted FMP6 file we tried to salvage that was sporadically leaving fields out of the printed layout. Yeep.

Make sure you've checked the other tidbits of advise in this thread.

Also, there are some inconsistencies with the rendering and placement of objects when the layout's zoom level is other than 100%. I don't think this has been fixed in v3.

Actually - I tried changing font smoothing setting down to 6 instead of 8 again and this time it worked - I think I had tried that BEFORE the update but not again after. So, that fixed it for me - problem gone, happy user.

The fonts on that layout are probably 8-point. A cruel thing to do to an 83-year-old man!
