Can tabs be set to trigger a script on entry?

The new tab control looks good, I was hoping it would drastically cut down on the number of layouts I use.... where I have a layout that is duplicated depending on whether the user is viewing, editing, creating or deleting a record.

I was hoping to do this using tabs but I cant see if I can validate data entered before they can switch tabs. E.g if they use a tab to switch to a view where the fields are accessible to edit and then change to another tab can I trigger a script that checks and validates the data before it goes to the new tab?
