I would like to install Filemaker 8 and begin familiarizing myself with the new features. But we still use Filemaker 7 and can not risk full implementation until Filemaker 8 is battle tested in our scenario.

How does Filemaker 8 install with Filemaker Developer 7? Do both installs run without conflict? How you deal with Filemaker 8 take over the *.fm7 files?

Let me know if you have any suggestions migrating solutions to Filemaker 8. It does not seem complex since Filemaker 8 uses the *.fm7 format. But you never know.

Every FM7 icons changes to FM8 icons...

So, if you doble click on it, FM8 opens !

You'll be able to open with FM7 with "right click" on the icon and chose FM7 for open the file!

But both installs run without conflict.

I wasn't able to open the two programs at the same time.

Neville310,

I have installed FMP8 Advanced on my machine right alongside FM Developer 7. We are also hosting the files with FM Server 7. I have not had any problems (yet) although I make sure that I do not design any version 8 features into the hosted files.

So far I've been impressed with the stability of v8 and the smoothness too. I'm currently rebuilding a couple of modules but they are not being hosted by server and nobody other than me is accessing them.

One thing; after installing v8 the .fp7 will probably be associated with v8 (courtesy of the Windows OS) so you will need to open v7 manually and then find your file manually if you want to work on it with v7.

RE: File opening

You can of course manually override the file association and force Windows (Or Mac OS) to open your files with 7.

RE: FMP 8 Quality/Experience

I'm having a very good experience with 8. However, there can be minor problems. The only ones I've had so far were little text formatting behavior changes in complicated print layouts.
