File References

Featured Replies

I want to clean up my solution that was migrated from v6 to v8 Advanced. I now have a number of file references like 'Contacts 2', 'Contacts 3', etc. all referring to the same file(s).

I tried running the DDR producing HTML (should it be XML?), but FM can't seem to find files that are already open in Filemaker. Then the sucker locked up when I tried to cancel the DDR.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Steve

Is the question about cleaning up the file references or running the DDR?

Hi Ender...its really about cleaning up the file references. I've got quite a few duplicates that could be removed, and I thought the DDR might provide a clue as to where the references were used in scripts and relationships.

I've read that a solution will open more slowly if there are a lot of references to resolve, and I'm anal about trying to remove stuff that's not needed. In the past, I would have used Analyzer from Waves in Motion, but it won't work now.

Ideally, file references should be consolidated prior to conversion using MetadataMagic's File Reference fixer. To consolidate them after is a lot of work. You'll have to go through every script (looking for Perform Script [ External... ],) relationship, and value list, changing the source file reference to one that will be used for all. When you think you've got them all, delete the unused ones. Then look to see if any orphans were left behind.

It's unfortunate that you couldn't get the DDR to work, as that could help here.
