Can separation model cause field not found error

Using PHP API

I've used the separation model (raw data in one file, ui with no tables of it's own in another).

No problem accessing these fields through a layout on the raw data file but I get a field not found error when trying to access the same fields on the UI database.

Is it not possible to link to these fields through the UI database?

Ensure that you are using the same php api enabled account in both DB's with same username / password and it should work fine.
