I have a category value list and want the end user to only see certain values depending upon which category they pick. The end users also need the ability to edit (add and delete) categories as well as (add and delete) associated values within each category. I cannot, for the life of me, get this application to work. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be mortally in their debt. I have gone on database pros and converted samples but they were originally created in FMPro3 and will convert to FMPro5 and work as a stand alone but don't seem to work when I try to implement the process within my current FMPro5 database. Again, any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks... mp

You don't want to convert FM 3 or 4 solutions to this problem. New features in FM 5 make this MUCH easier. The basic idea is that value lists can come from other files using a relationship. Create a separate file with the fields "Category" and "Value". Relate the field "Category" in you primary file to "Category" in the added file. When you define value lists in your primary file use the "using relationship" option and select the "Value" field for display in the value list. -bd

Please allow me to muddy the waters a little bit more...

I'm trying to use a conditional value list in a portal. In other words, I've got a portal row with nothing but related values in it and I'd like to have a subset of values pop up in the second field after I populate the first.

I've gotten it to work if I put a field into the portal from the primary database but it enters the same value in each row of the portal.

I've also tried to define a related value list in the related file and use it in the primary file with no luck.

If all of this confuses you, how do you think I feel? Any help would be appreciated.

Jim
