Newbie struggles with converting files from FM5 to FM4

Hello Everyone,

I am just learning FM5, and am struggling with something that I thought would be a relatively straightforward procedure, namely converting FM5 files so that they can be read by FM4.

Is there any way that this can be done? I thought it would be as simple as using the "Save As" command, but this doesn't seem to work.

I desire to convert my work into FM4 files that can be read by the others in my group who are using this earlier version of the software. I realize that there potentially could be some loss of data in the conversion process, but our database is a pretty simple one so I am not worried about it much.

Anyone care to give this extreme novice some advice?

Thanks!

It can't, officially, be done. FileMaker has provided no path to go from a file made in FMP5 and open in in FMP3 or 4.

However, there is a utility out there somewhere that claims to do the job. I would check around http://www.fmfiles.com and search for convert or save as. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Chuck

You can always export the info and then import it into a FileMaker 4 file -- of course, you have to recreate the layouts and scripts, but at least the data is transferable.

Why would you want to go backwards, anyway?
