Getting out of single user mode

Featured Replies

I am helping a user setup a 2 file related application on 2 win2k pro machines. He has 2 seperate license of FM v5 installed on both machines, opened and verified that multi-user is selected on both files on the host machine and also that local data access companion is checked. He has shared the folder of the host machine allowing full control to the everyone group and has added everyone group to the security permissions of the folder with full control. Yet when he tries to open the FM file from the client machine he gets the error that the file is in single user mode or that the host cannot be found.

The data files are in a subfolder off of the filemaker pro folder.

I know I am overlooking something but cannot figure it out, as I use a FM solution on a win 2k pro peer to peer network almost daily.

Thanks

Are you trying to open the file by accessing the host computer directly or are you using the HOSTS button from the Open File box?

Also under Edit --> Preferences --> Application on the General Tab, make sure you have selected TCP/IP or IPX and that the protocol is installed on the machines.

Hope this helps.

This peer to peer Windows 2000 pro network issue was an oversite on my part. In studying for my MCSE, I forgot that the peer to peer network required that any user needing access to a local resource must also have an account setup on that local machine. This is not in line with the Active Directory model in a client/server network structure that the majority of my classes have taught me to think.

Thanks

It sounds like you may be trying to actually "open" the shared file instead of letting FileMaker use its built in networking capabilities.

Instead of going to the shared file and opening the database on the other's machine, launch the database on the machine where the files are located and then on the other machines, open the Filemaker application. Choose, "Open exisiting file", then click on the lower right hand button "host", you will either automatically see the files in the box or you will need to specify a host name or IP address of the hosing computer where the files exisit.
