A client has a Toshiba laptop. When attempting to back up to Zip disks, she discovered that she couldn't just copy files to the root of the Zip, but had to place them in folders. So she placed a bunch of linked JPEG files in folders, backed them up, then restored them to their original location.

Now, in the FMP5 database, the links to these pix have gotten screwy. A link that used to be to, say, "ryane.jpg" now brings up "ryans.jpg". No change was made in the FMP file, and the pix are all exactly where they used to be.

Huh?

It gets weirder.

Continuing in the record with the pic that's supposed to be "ryane.jpg" and is showing the "ryans.jpg" pic...

First of all, the "ryane.jpg" pic was opened by itself, and it is the correct picture. Then the picture is removed from its folder. Back in FMP, the container for the picture (which was showing the "ryans.jpg" pic) now says it can't find the "ryane.jpg" file.

It has the correct path ... to a picture that's correct ... but the wrong pic keeps showing up.

B)?:

Just a guess... e and s are close on the keyboard: cound it be a simple typo somewhere?

On a Mac, odd things used to happen when the keyboard layout was switched to a different language. Does windows have a similar thing?

Definitely not a typo -- you might say is "coundn't" be that.

Well, the folks at Filemaker, Inc. said that since FMP only indexes the first 31 characters of the link, that links can get corrupted. They also said that the only way to fix this is to re-establish the links.

There's definitely something wrong when links can get so easily corrupted!
